Considering Alternative Power Options?

1.Back-Up Power:
This would require an alternative power source to supply the items  in your house which you want to operate during an unfortunate power outage or during load shedding. The recommended technologies are generators or UPS battery back-up systems.

 Generators

However small or big, this is similar to purchasing a motor vehicle as it has a petrol or diesel-fired engine and an alternator. ie moving parts, electricity and fumes.
A technical assessment needs to be undertaken to determine the power rating required ensuring that the supply and load are correctly matched. An oversized or undersized generator will cost you unnecessary expenses.
In most cases the generator will be connected to the main electrical supply in the house and this would require the services of a qualified electrician and the issuing of a certificate of compliance on completion of the installation.

Bearing this in mind, it makes sense to seek expert advice from a reputable dealer.

UPS Battery Back-up

This is a battery-supplied system which also has an in-built battery charger and an inverter for  changing the DC supply to usable AC electricity.
The system is usually connected so that it supplies the required load automatically when the power switches off.
Again, as for the generator, a technical assessment needs to be undertaken to determine the power rating required ensuring that the supply and load are correctly matched. Also, the size of the system, and the cost, are determined by the required operating time.
The installation procedure is normally as for that of a generator.

Again, technically-correct advice is required when this option is considered.

2. Replacement – Power:
This is when a customer wishes his premises to become independent of the local authority’s electrical supply and involves the installation of Solar Water-Heating Systems, Photo Voltaic Panels, Wind Generators, Gas Cooking systems, Diesel Generators etc.

Needless to say, all these technologies involve energy and power and consequently are a safety and health risk. One needs to take all the relevant factors into account in order to make an informed, financially-sound and safe choice.
